Technical TextilesThe Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) along with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will organise a workshop on ‘Flame Retardant Standards in Technical Textiles’ in New Delhi, on September one.

Besides senior officials from the BIS and CII, the half-day workshop will be attended by some eminent people in the field including Arindam Basu, director general, Northern India Textile Research Associaiton (NITRA), VK Kothari from department of textile technology, IIT-Delhi; and Umasankar Mahapatra, head – Technial Marketing & Product Innovation, Arvind Limited. Representatives from companies like Reliance Industries, JMD Group, Delkon, and Shri Balaji Exims will also remain present there.

While there is a broad agreement on the need for flame retardant standards, there are certain areas where stakeholders need clarity. The workshop will bridge the gap and take a step forward towards securing lives.

The theme for the inaugural session will be ‘Collaborating for a fire-safe India – The role of technical textiles’. Key speakers will be from the ministry of textiles, and BIS.

The discussion would also seek to address issues like the role technical chemical textile can play in fire-prevention and can India become a supplier to the world, mandating higher standards and overcoming the implementation challenge through closer coordinating, and liability issues pertaining to the FR order.
