The Sri Lankan garment manufacturing and exporting industry has launched a unified QR code system for apparel labels, which is expected to improve transparency throughout the supply chain.

The industry is responding to the worldwide call for heightened transparency and sustainability in manufacturing practices by unveiling the QR Code.

For launching the QR Code, the clothing sector has partnered with the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the Global Language of Business (GS1).

The main objective is to provide comprehensive information, which is designed to enhance track and trace capabilities across the supply chain.

The information includes details like product characteristics, supply chain specifics, materials used, care instructions, brand identity, compliance data, and recycling guidelines.

The objective also includes streamlining data exchange, facilitating accurate reporting, and ensuring compliance with increasing global sustainability regulations, primarily from its key export markets like the EU, UK, and US.

The QR code unites clothing manufacturing companies, fabric producers, brands, and retailers around a common goal and is a significant milestone in the pursuit of complete supply chain traceability.

The goal is also to aim is also to boost brand adherence and prioritise disclosures in line with the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) guidelines.

The Sri Lankan apparel sector is also exploring opportunities to broaden the initiative’s impact by granting access to reliable data sources.

This is being done to demonstrate a commitment to advancing transparency and sustainability in the Sri Lankan clothing production value chain.
