The South India Garments Association (SIGA) has appealed to the Government of Karnataka to establish Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and textile parks exclusively for small and medium textile enterprises (SMEs). While the state has developed infrastructure catering to large textile corporations, SIGA noted the urgent need for focused support for smaller players, who form the backbone of local textile manufacturing.
Anurag Singhla, President of SIGA, emphasized that SEZs for SMEs would not only boost state revenues but also generate employment and sustain livelihoods. “Most small and medium textile units are struggling due to a drop in garment demand and lack of flexible policy support. There are no dedicated SEZs or parks for them as of now,” he said. The average garment consumption per person has dropped significantly due to financial stress, further affecting production volumes.
Singhla also urged the government to introduce flexible and supportive policies around tax laws, industrial growth initiatives, labour reforms, and GST to help small manufacturers stay competitive. “Over the last three decades, SIGA has played a vital role in bridging the gap between the garment industry and the government by highlighting industry challenges and educating stakeholders,” he added.
30th SIGA Garment Fair 2025 Announced
SIGA also announced that the 30th SIGA Garment Fair 2025 will be held from July 29 at Princess Shrine, Palace Grounds, Bangalore, as a dedicated Business-to-Business (B2B) trade platform. The event will showcase over 100 garment brands, with more than 2,000 retailers expected to attend from across Karnataka and neighboring states.
Rajesh Chawat, Secretary of SIGA, highlighted that leading textile manufacturers from Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Surat will participate in the three-day expo. “We are targeting a business turnover of ₹100 to ₹150 crore from this fair,” he shared.
