The pashmina wool processing plant has been postponed despite government of Nepal allocated Np Rs 6 million and it might take another fiscal year to complete. The Trade and Export Promotion Center (TEPC) is interested in setting up the processing plants in Dolpa, Manang and also in the main pashmina producing region in the Northern Nepal district, Mustang as suggested by Pashmina entrepreneurs.
Due to the absence of pashmina processing plant in Nepal, the refining is done in China. So, establishing a plant would help domestic pashmina entrepreneurs to make finished goods in Nepal itself, according to Chyangra farmers.
Meanwhile, Chyangra Pashmina, the collective trademark of Nepali pashmina products, has been approved by a total of 47 countries. The Chyangra Pashmina logo, okayed for use on Nepali pashmina products in 2011, guarantees that strict quality standards and environmentally friendly methods have been followed and no child will be laboured.
Following the approval of Chyangra trademark, exports of Nepali pashmina products have grown from Rs 1.63 billion in 2010-11 to Rs 2.44 billion in 2016-17, as per TEPC data.
