MSME Exports Grow, But GDP Share Declines; Policy Impact Key

  • Indian MSME product exports grew 7.5% in FY2017-18 to USD 147.39 billion, recovering from a previous decline.
  • Garment manufacturers, weavers, and dyers, predominantly MSMEs, are directly impacted by export performance and government support.
  • Government initiatives aim to boost competitiveness, potentially increasing export orders and stabilizing production costs for MSME apparel/textile units.
  • Despite export growth, MSMEs' declining GDP share (28.9% in FY2016-17) highlights the need for sustained policy effectiveness to maintain economic contribution.
  • Evaluate specific government schemes like MEIS and Interest Equalisation for their potential to enhance export strategies and operational efficiency.
