On the inauguration of Indian Textile Global Summit 2018, Suresh Prabhu, Union Commerce and Industry minister on being urged for ‘one nation, one policy’ said that his ministry is discussing with various countries to explore new markets for Indian fabrics, garments and apparel in order to boost exports.

The phrase “One Nation, One Policy” for textiles was taken from the concept of GST – ‘one nation, one tax’. It was spoken by Shailesh Patwari, president, Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries (GCCI). The event was jointly organised by GCCI and Maskati Cloth Market Mahajan (MCMM) in Ahmedabad and has submitted a white paper to the minister for making a single textile policy for India.

Emphasising on the Indian textile industry’s depending on the European Union and the US for exports, Prabhu said that due to export in Europe and US only, we tend to have no orders during off season as we don’t have markets in other parts of the world.

The minister said, “We are talking to Latin American countries to explore new markets for our products. We are also exploring Australia as a potential market.”

The team is also working on making khadi a globally accepted fibre and to promote globally, the government has asked the Indian Institute of Fashion Technology (IIFT) to work on a new course on this, which will be launched soon, he added.
