Govt to Facilitate Tangaliya Weavers in Purchasing Looms

Govt to Facilitate Tangaliya Weavers in Purchasing Looms

Indian government will facilitate Tangaliya weavers in purchase of looms, by providing them an assistance amounting to 90 per cent of the price of looms, textiles minister, Smriti Irani said. She also announced the formation of a special association of Tangaliya workers to work for the interest of these weavers from Surendranagar district of Gujarat.

Expressing appreciation for the Tangaliya embroidery, the minister said that the work needs to be marketed through international platforms. She requested the district administration to make proper arrangements for the same.

Irani also appealed to fashion designers to use the Tangaliya art work for their fashionable garments. She spoke of Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, exhorting weavers to avail its benefits.

Tangaliya a dotted woven textile of Surendranagar district, Saurashtra, is found only in Gujarat and is usually worn as a wraparound skirt by the women of the Bharwad shephered community. Tangaliya designs are used for preparing shawls, dupattas, dress materials, home décor products and accessories such as bedsheets, pillow covers and more. The patterns are formed during the weaving process to create dotted designs for floral and geometrical motifs by using cotton or woolen yarn.
