Bangladesh Garment Exports Touch Historic Landmark In January

Bangladesh garment exports have touched a historic landmark in January 2024, by reporting the highest-ever apparel exports in a single month till date.

Apparel exports from Bangladesh touched US$ 4.97 billion in January 2024, an increase of 12.45 percent over January 2023 which is very much close to the US$ 5 billion mark.

Of these, knitwear exports rose 17.32 percent from a year ago month and woven clothing shipments grew by 7.16 percent.

Faruque Hassan, the President of BGMEA in a statement however expressed caution and told the industry to not get carried away by the export figures in January.

“We need to be particularly careful while adding new capacity or undertaking expansion because we cannot add more vulnerability to our existing overcapacity situation,” Hassan stated.

He considered backward linkages to be quality investments and crucial for the apparel industry for the next five years.

“These figures also reflect how the industry is diversifying its products and its market base, and moving up the value addition ladder,” he added.
