Vidarbha Maharashtra chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis said eight more new textile mills would come up in the Vidarbha region of the state, which has seen a spate of suicides by cotton farmers in recent years.

One new textile mill would begin operations within a few days in Nandgaon, located in the Vidarbha belt, he said while inaugurating an Agriculture Development Exhibition and Workshop at Amravati.

Fadnavis said “For strengthening cotton farmers financially, setting up of cotton textile processing units along with facilities of irrigation is necessary,” Besides, emphasis will be given on setting up textile mills at various places and mainly cotton growing regions of Vidarbha and Marathwada, he added.

At the same time, stress will also be laid on completing irrigation projects in Vidarbha so that farmers did not need to rely on just rains for which Rs 3,500 crore has been sanctioned, chief minister added.
