CONTRIBUTION OF TEXTILE INDUSTRY IN INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION

The Indian textile industry plays a pivotal role in the nation’s economic development. It is one of the oldest and most established industries in India, showcasing the country’s heritage while driving modern innovation. With its strong contribution to GDP, exports, and employment, the textile industry continues to act as a cornerstone of India’s growth story.

According to the National Account Statistics, 2025, the textile industry contributes an average of 2% to India’s GDP and nearly 11% to the manufacturing Gross Value Added (GVA) during the last three years. The sector directly employs over 45 million people, making it the second-largest employment provider in the country after agriculture. Importantly, the textile industry has also become a significant source of women’s empowerment, with a large percentage of female workers in rural and semi-urban areas.

Government Initiatives to Strengthen the Textile Industry

The Government of India continues to roll out targeted programmes to modernize the textile industry, attract investments, and boost exports. These schemes are designed not only to expand the domestic market but also to make India globally competitive.

1. PM MITRA Parks Scheme

The Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) scheme is one of the most ambitious initiatives for the textile industry. The government has approved the establishment of seven mega textile parks equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, plug-and-play facilities, and large-scale modern systems. These parks are expected to attract significant private investment, reduce logistics costs, and create lakhs of new jobs, thereby strengthening India’s position in the global textile market.

2. Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Textiles

The PLI scheme for textiles focuses on high-growth sectors such as Manmade Fibre (MMF) fabrics, MMF apparel, and technical textiles. By encouraging large-scale production, the PLI scheme helps the textile industry enhance competitiveness, diversify export offerings, and build economies of scale.

3. National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM)

The NTTM is a focused programme to make India a leader in the technical textile industry. It covers four main areas:

  • Research, innovation, and development
  • Market promotion and expansion
  • Education, training, and skill development
  • Export promotion of technical textiles

From geotextiles used in infrastructure to medical and defense textiles, the mission positions India to tap into global demand for high-performance textile products.

4. Skill Development and Handloom Support

Schemes such as Samarth and the National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP) focus on upskilling workers, artisans, and entrepreneurs in the textile industry. These initiatives aim to create a future-ready workforce capable of blending traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques.

A Unique Blend of Tradition and Innovation

What sets the Indian textile industry apart is its ability to merge traditional crafts with modern manufacturing. From handwoven khadi and silk to advanced synthetic fabrics and sustainable apparel, India’s textile industry balances heritage and modernity. This dual strength not only boosts domestic demand but also ensures strong global export competitiveness.

Driving Exports and Economic Growth

The textile industry consistently remains a top contributor to India’s exports, serving as a crucial source of foreign exchange. With new initiatives such as PM MITRA parks and PLI incentives, exports are projected to rise further, supporting India’s vision of becoming a global textile manufacturing hub.

Looking Ahead

As stated by Shri Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for Textiles, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, the government is fully committed to advancing the textile industry through structural reforms and sustained investment. The sector is poised to witness significant transformation with increased focus on employment, innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness.

The future of the Indian textile industry lies in its seamless ability to merge tradition with innovation, ensuring it remains a vital pillar of India’s economic growth and a symbol of its cultural pride.
