According to data from the statistical office of the European Union, total clothing imports by member countries of the EU slipped 16.22 percent to €83.19 billion in 2023 vis-à-vis €99.29 billion in 2022.

The fall in imports can be attributed to the slowdown in apparel retail sales in countries of the EU, mainly due to high inflationary trends.

The data informed that garment imports by the EU from China in 2023 fell 21.54 percent to €22.73 billion as against €28.98 billion in 2022.

Apparel imports from Bangladesh dropped 20.65 percent to €17.39 billion in 2023, compared to €21.91 billion in its previous year.

Volume-wise, Bangladesh’s clothing exports to the EU in 2023 amounted to 11.14 billion kg while those of China stood at 11.10 billion kg.

Apparel imports of the EU from Turkey reduced 13.23 percent to €9.93 billion versus €11.45 billion in 2022.

Imports from India amounted to €4.04 billion in 2023, a decrease of 13.12 percent vis-à-vis €4.65 billion in 2022.
